Goodyear: Your Comments
The following is a sampling of the comments we received about the "Goodyear Destroys Testimony" article posted on our website under the RV Reporter section. We also received several inquiries about other tires — we will research those and report to you later this summer:
Thank you for this very important safety information. Even those of us driving the smaller class B or C RVs need to aware of these issues.

Great article. This is the kind of information we seek. RVers need to have
an independent, truthful source of information. It is important that we receive news that is not colored by either commercial or political interest. I continue to depend on you guys to "tell it like it is." Keep up the good work.
Please write an article on the "State of the Industry." I have a friend who recently purchased an Alpine. I am now told that Western RV has gone out of business. This, of course, is causing my friend a lot of grief as he has some warranty work he needs done. He was told not to bother bringing his in for the work. Is this a sign of things to come?
Diesel is approaching $5.00 per gallon in California.
What is a used RV really worth in today's market?. As the former Chief Pricing Officer of a Fortune 150 company, I certainly do not know how I would be pricing to cover this cost increase.

I have this tire on my 1999 Avion.. I can't figure out if they are recalling all
these tires or not. All my tires are in very good shape -- no weather cracking or dry rot. In fact, I have a new one in my storage that has never been put on the ground. My RV is 38 feet long. Are they recalling all these tires or just some of them? Or certain RVs? Thanks.

Consumers need to educate themselves. While having some work done on my motorhome, I looked at trailers on the lot and if you added up the weight each tire could carry it was less than the gross weight of the trailer on the sticker. Manufacturers spend money on what you can see, aimed mainly at the women. Unlike car magazines, the RV press are not critical.
Thank goodness for organizations like yours.
Hilton Lyons.
It is a shame what our companies are doing to us as customers -- keeping us in the dark and not giving us the products that would make our lives safer. On my coach, I must have gotten over a dozen responses when I asked what is the right tire pressure on my tires. I am still a little bit worried about it, but I do keep my tires inflated to the maximum tire pressure as indicated on the tires.
Rudy Wallis
Gee! This sounds a lot like Firestone and Ford with the Explorer.
John Lang
We all know this industry is mostly, not all, been running wide open for too long. Why can't they clean up their act? Next will be government controls and they will cry and moan about how they have to raise prices due to this and that -- the same as the auto companies. Will it take Japan to enter the market with quality control to wake up these people as they did to autos ? Wake up. It's possible.
Ronald Grogg
I find it hard to believe that RVers are so dense as to not look at the sidewalls of the tires on a Class A and see the "Maximum Recommended Inflation Pressure" printed on the tire. I keep both my passenger cars (1995 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham for towing our Viking PopUp, Chrysler Concorde) at that pressure. A soft and floppy tire is disaster in the making in any vehicle let alone a large Class A motor home.

I have a 2008 Monaco Camelot 43-foot with a tag axle. This coach has
Goodyear tires on it. Are these tires safe? We are very concerned for our safety. Thank you for your good work.

What information do you have on Good Year G-670 tires? (DOT 2005)
About a year ago I bought a set of 6 tires for my motor home, and on the second trip home had a blowout (1,500 miles on tires ) After reading your article, I was wondering if I should go after Goodyear for my cost of $2,300. Thanks,
Sal Culmo
Too many companies operate these days with the "maybe nothing will
happen" business model. Why? Because the government, starting in the Reagan Era, stopped regulating various businesses. So things like mad cow, poison in pet food, and crappy tires are happening more and more. The government said that the companies would be better suited to regulate themselves because if they didn't they would go out of
business.
Now people are being killed and injured, and damage is being done, the government is saying "Let the buyer beware". We are on our own! Thanks to organizations like rv.org the message is getting out to at least some of the people in harm's way!

Interesting article on the G-159 tires. But what about the Goodyear G-614
tires that are blowing up all over the place? Is this another potentially dangerous situation that Goodyear and trailer manufacturers are waiting for deaths/lawsuits before acting? Check any RV forum and do a search on G-614 tires, you will see what I'm talking about.

Here we go again. Blame someone else for the failings of the
consumer. While I don't condone Goodyear's actions, or the RV
manufacturers (and sales people) for that matter, it is ultimately the
responsibility of the consumer to ensure that the vehicle they buy
and operate is adequately equipped for their needs. It isn't rocket
science to look at the weight ratings on the tires (and axles) and
compare that to the gross weight rating of the vehicle. If they are
inadequate (or even marginal), specify higher rated axles / tires or
look for another rig. Any consumer incapable of doing this, or
unwilling to do this, has no business operating a vehicle as large (and
heavy) as a class-A motorhome or big 5th wheel on a public highway
endangering themselves and others.

I ran those tires. I guess I was just lucky. Good read, thanks.
A. J. Utlaut

I really appreciate these reports. Keep them coming.

I like this type of article a lot. I am on your e-mail list because I subscribe to and support RV Consumer Group and admire your efforts.
On the subject of who should know better, I had a $5,000 Mor-Ryde Independent Suspension system installed on my fiver at their Elkart, Indiana factory . They proudly recommended 4 Goodyear Wrangler LT light truck tires. I don't understand why they did that; after spending $5,000 for the suspension, I was more than willing to buy high quality safe tires. The tires were never run overloaded or underinflated. I had one blowout and 3 tread separations in less than 15,000 miles. I sent them an e-mail about that; I'll bet they are still doing it and I'll bet they destroyed my e-mail.

Thanks for keeping me up-to-date on RV issues. I don't currently own an RV since I needed to come out of retirement for awhile to replenish the RV budget. But, I hope to be back in the RV world again when I can afford it. The article was excellent!
Thanks, again!
Jim Hansen
Thank goodness you are there monitoring this sort of thing because otherwise most of us would have no idea what is going on or what to question.
Jean Lowe
This was a great article. Although we own a fiver we still like to be informed.

When you go to the Monaco site and inquire about the tire recall, they say
there is no recall. Before I bought the 2000 Windsor it had a left front blowout and since I've had it I have had two blowouts. One left rear and a right front and about $5,000 in damage each time. I have also gone to Goodyear and asked if there was a recall on these tires but was told, no. Where would I find this information?
Tom Sunderlin
Thank you very much for this notice. I have a 1999 Safari Continental and 3 of the G159 Goodyear tires have exploded. No damage done, but pretty
scary.
Francois Choquette
Keep them coming, and - Thank You for your reporting.
John Zundel
What is the final result of the case? I have had numerous blowouts on my
2003 HR Presidential and an axle failure. Do you have any data on that?
Zeke Zarrella
Good article. I guess this isn't published by the press so all could see what's going on. Keep up the good work.
Leonard Melander
Thanks for the informative write-up on tires. Amazing this could be allowed to happen. I will certainly keep this info on hand when looking at Class A motorhomes(G-159).
D. A. Patterson
Many thanks for your distribution of information that is of obvious benefit to us RV folks, and which probably would have gone unnoticed were it not for your vigilance. It makes my annual membership renewal all the more valuable.
Sid Halperen
Our sincere thanks to all of you for taking the time to contribute your comments and experiences.
