The photo of the VW with a toilet made me chuckle, but the truth cannot be denied: Having a toilet while traveling any distance is a necessity, not a luxury when many of us get to a "certain age".
I have a Pleasure-Way class B wide body that I absolutely love. Whenever I have an appointment a bit far from home, I choose to drive it because invariably, "the need to P" will present itself - and public toilets are not always available nor desirable.
Some folks love having an RV toilet, while others do not. However, if you are planning to camp or travel in an RV, then you need to seriously consider having one: They are convenient and more comfortable when needed in the middle of the night, or even while making a quick stop when traveling. RV toilets are self-contained and ideal for older travelers like me - the thought of squatting in the woods is definitely not as appealing to me now that I can hardly bend my knees! Let's face it, when the "need to P" is dire, there's nothing more comfortable than using your own toilet.
The only downside that I can think of in having an RV toilet is that, at some point, you will have to find a dump station somewhere to empty the black water, rinse the tank, etc. However, that is a minor inconvenience in comparison to the benefits of having one.
A very good tip I've been given is that after the tank has been emptied, it is crucial to clean it out. There are many recommended cleaning products for RV toilets (you can find endless RV cleaning products on Amazon). After pouring a selected cleaning product into the toilet bowl, continue to the next dumping station and empty the black water tank again. One of our members sent me the following tip: Use 1 cup of Borax, 1 cup of blue Dawn liquid detergent, and a 10-pound bag of ice - pour it all down the toilet (we find that any good liquid detergent will work as well). Driving to the next campsite destination, all that movement will clean the black water tank, with the ice scrubbing it and the soap cleaning it.
There's nothing more satisfying than having a clean toilet / tank. Now, go forth and P!
